Intriguing Croatia, Slovenia & Montenegro
Glatt Kosher Tour

August 16 - 25, 2011

Experience a most intriguing tour of Croatia, Slovenia & Montenegro, three countries that were once part of Yugoslavia. They all lie along the Adriatic coast where the climate ranges from coastal Mediterranean to dry inland. Our tour visits Slovenia, bordering of the Julian Alps with its charming natural sites such as Lake Bled and the stalactite caves of Postojna. Ljubljana, Slovenia's capital, looks to day the way it was built from the start - as a typical city from the times of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. We'll also visit Montenegro – the "Black Mountain" with its amazing scenery and wondrous coastal inlets and bays. Croatia, the third country on our tour, is home to Plitvica, arguably the most beautiful nature reserve in the world – a stunning combination of waterfalls and lakes, lush undergrowth and unique natural surroundings, created by the water into the spectacular Karst rock that is indigenous to this part of the world. The city of Dubrovnik is built on a peninsula that fiercely guards its port. Its Old City is built on ancient Roman ruins, and dates back to the Middle Ages, when it was ruled by the Kingdom of Venice.

We recommend that passengers NOT traveling from Israel/Europe arrive in Dubrovnik the day before the start of the tour. Special hotel rates are available for tour participants choosing to benefit from this extra night.

Itinerary
Day 1, Tuesday: Dubrovnik
Dubrovnik is known as the "Pearl of the Adriatic" and is one of UNESCO's World Heritage sites. We'll start our visit with a guided tour of the walled Old City. We'll see the Rector's Palace – home of the city's ancient rulers, the Jews' Street and the synagogue, the harbor and more.
We'll visit the Franciscan Abbey and the ancient pharmacy. Later on we'll take a leisurely cruise around the walls of the old city and get a different view of this fascinating city.
Day 2, Wednesday: Dubrovnik - Montenegro
This will be an amazing and wondrous day as we travel south and cross the border into some wild countryside with spectacular scenery. Montenegro – the Land of the Black Mountains, where lofty peaks soar high above ancient towns and magnificent beaches. After a brief visit to the walled city of Kotor, we'll ascend the winding steep road to the top of Mount Lovcen, and drive via Njegosi to Cetinje, the ancient capital of Montenegro. We'll descend via the other side of the mountain range where we'll be treated to a magnificent vista over the seaside vacation town of Budva.
At the end of the day we'll return to our hotel in Dubrovnik.
Day 3, Thursday: Dubrovnik - Split
This morning we'll leave Dubrovnik and drive to Split along the Adriatic coast – one of the finest coastlines in Europe. Along the way we'll stop at Mali Ston – a walled middle ages fishing village. We'll stop for a while in the area of Bosnia-Herzegovina, and in the afternoon we'll arrive to our hotel in Split. After dinner we'll go out to stroll through the streets of this charming city, with its ancient port.
Day 4, Friday: Split
After breakfast we'll head out to the ancient part of the city of Split, a UNESCO World Heritage site. We'll see the ancient Roman Palace of Deocletian, Jupiter's Temple, the Cathedral, the Marina and the market.
After our tour we'll return to our hotel to prepare for Shabbat.
Day 5, Shabbat: Split
After Shabbat services and lunch we'll take a walking tour near our hotel.
Day 6, Sunday: Split – Krka National Park - Plitvice
A morning departure sees us heading to visit the Nature Reserve at Krka National Park. Here we'll see amazing birds, beautiful waterfalls and lush plant life. Afterwards we'll travel to our hotel near Plitvice, a nature reserve spread over 195 square kilometers, including 16 lakes connected to one another by magnificent waterfalls.
Day 7, Monday: Plitvice – Ljubljana - Bled
This morning we'll visit the Nature Reserve of Plitvice. We'll walk among the lakes and waterfalls, cross the wooden bridges and the stroll along the winding paths of the forest. We'll continue to the capital of Slovenia – Ljubljana. We'll tour the city and experience its unique Baroque architecture. We'll see the City Hall, the Opera House, the University and the Franciscan Cathedral. We'll view some of the city's famous bridges: The Dragon's Bridge over the Ljubljana River, the Shoemaker's Bridge and the Triple Bridge the central landmark of the city. After the visit we'll make our way to Bled.
Day 8, Tuesday: Bled – Postojna Caves - Opatia
After breakfast we'll go to visit the stalactite caves at Postojna. One of the largest of its kind in the world, it's a wonder of creation by nature over millions of years, and it's more than 25 km long! We'll enter the cave on a small electric train, and then continue on foot for about an hour inside this astonishing cave. We'll continue to Opatia – the favorite summer vacation spot of the rulers of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. We'll walk down the main street - lined with hotels and cafes, the elegant boardwalk along the sea, and Park Angiolina.

There is the possibility of taking a cruise along the Adriatic coast to the village of Lubran (Optional Extra).
Day 9, Wednesday: Bled, Vintgar Canyon, Buhin
This morning we'll ascend to the ancient fortress that overlooks the lake, and see how the princes lived and the nature of their relationship with the Tyrolean church elders. Then we'll take a fantastic tour of Vintgar Canyon, carved through the mountains by the Radovna River. We'll walk along the canyon on wooded paths overlooking the rushing emerald waters, cross over many bridges and watch the fish in the crystal clear waters. We'll continue through the lush Buhin Valley until we reach the beautiful Lake Buhin, known as the "Crystal of Europe."

We can take the cable car to the top of Mount Wegel for an amazing view of the valley (Optional Extra).
Day 10, Thursday: Bled – Zagreb – Home Gateway
Today we'll travel to Zagreb, capital of Croatia. This is the country's governmental center as well as its cultural focus. We'll take a guided tour of the city and see the statue of King Tomislav, the National Theater and the impressive plazas. We'll also visit the "Stone Gate," Lutrcsak Tower, the ancient pharmacy, the parliament and the president's residence, followed by a visit to the city's unique cemetery along with its Jewish section and the memorial to those killed during the Holocaust.

Towards evening we'll make our way to the airport for the flight home.

Kashrut on Tours

Kosher food is provided to our travelers on all our tours. We work with the local Rabbinate to provide Hashgacha for all local ingredients and fresh meat and poultry. In some cases, we fly in kosher food from Israel and other sources, depending on the destination of the tour. We do not guarantee Pat Israel and Chalav Israel for all destinations.

In many destinations we have our own crockery and cutlery. Where we don't, we provide disposables at the meals. When we cook in Hotel kitchens, we ensure proper Kashering and we use our own kitchenware on kashered and covered surfaces. All this is done under the strict supervision of our trained staff/guides who function as our Mashgichim. Our travelers enjoy gourmet meals prepared by our team including fresh local fish, fruit, and vegetables. This is an integral part of Jewish travel. We make great efforts to assure that our travelers will experience local foods first-hand, while maintaining stringent observance of Kashrut laws on all occasions.

Rabbi Menahem Fogel
A native of Tel Aviv-Jaffa, Menahem Fogel served as a pulpit rabbi in South Africa and Canada before returning to Israel in 1984 to take up the position of spokesman of Yad Vashem, in Jerusalem, a position he held for six years. Since that time he has held senior positions in both the public and private sectors developing interactive computer systems for museums around the world. He also lived and worked in the USA, Netherlands, Austria, UK and India. A lifelong yearning for travel led to his becoming a Tour Manager in 2000 and developed expertise in tourism to Japan & China, Alaska, Canadian Rockies and Africa. Recently he took on the added role of Rav Hamachshir for The Kosher Travel Club to ensure the highest standards of Kashrut are implemented on all our Kosher Tours.
